The School Day and Curriculum

The School Day

The school day begins at 7:10 am and finishes at 12:30 pm (Primary School) and 1:00pm (High School) on a Monday to Thursday (12:00 for Reception Class in Terms 1 & 2); and at 12:00 noon on a Friday for both Schools.
There is one main break and the children bring a snack and drink, which they eat in class. The school encourages healthy food, such as fresh and dried fruit, sandwiches and nuts. Crisps, sweets, and fast-foods are best kept at home for treats.
Children who are staying for afternoon activities also bring their lunch to school.
Children are collected from the school car-park either when school finishes or at the end of their afternoon activity. These pick-up times are known in advance and we encourage parents to collect their children promptly and not leave them unattended until late in the afternoon.
Children also bring their PE kit to school each day in their school sports bag.

Each class prepares an Assembly every term. These are usually based on topics covered in the Curriculum and are always highly entertaining and informative. The children love taking part and parents are invited to attend.

Curriculum

The school follows the National Curriculum for England and Wales, at Key Stages 1 + 2, which prepares children for IGCSE, A Level or IB courses at High School (Key Stage 3 + 4). These qualifications are internationally accepted for entry onto Higher Education and University courses.  Our High School is currently building towards IGCSE and our first cohort will write their IGCSE in May 2020.
Special attention is given to the core skills of Literacy, Numeracy, Science and Information & Communications Technology (ICT). High quality and up-to-date commercial courses and teaching materials from the UK ensure progression and continuity.
Care is given to ensure each child is given work appropriate to their ability, so that children of all abilities are both challenged and supported.
Malawi’s climate and the expansive school grounds offer ample opportunity for PE lessons and, by Key Stage 2, all children receive at least 2 hours of PE each week, which include swimming in the warmer months and skill based activities throughout the year

The school makes every effort to identify and address any Specific Learning Difficulties a child may have. We believe in early intervention and one-to-one support lessons are available with a Learning Support Teacher .
The school has a policy on homework and encourages parents to become involved in their children’s learning. Each child has a Homework Diary, to be signed by parents. Parents can also use the diary to communicate with their child’s class teacher.
