Sports, Clubs and House System

Sports

Children are given a broad and balanced programme of Physical Education activities as part of the curriculum. Those selected for teams practice and play their matches outside the timetabled lessons. The school takes part in sports fixtures with other local schools.
The main competitive sports are football, netball, hockey, swimming and athletics. Inter-House sports competitions take place throughout the year and are sources of great excitement for the children. It is the school policy that all children in Year 6 will be offered the opportunity to represent the school on the sports field. The school feels competitive sports, played in the right spirit, can help children develop leadership and team skills and learn how to accept defeat and victory with dignity. Parents are encouraged to watch our sports fixtures.
Hillview School also hosts a day-long annual Triathlon. Many people come to participate and it is open to all ages. Prizes are awarded to the winners in the various categories.

Afternoon Activities

A variety of sports and optional club activities are offered in the afternoons to pupils from Year 1 up to Year 6. Children chosen to represent the school in sports fixtures are required to attend practice sessions and be available for matches, which are usually on Thursday afternoons. There is no extra charge for afternoon activities as these are included in the school fees. They are an important part of a child’s social development and integration into the school.
A list of the afternoon activities and their times are dispay on the Clubs page on this website.
We are always looking for volunteers to run club activities. You don’t have to be particularly skilled, just to enjoy being with children!

The House System

There are three Houses in school, named after three peaks on Mount Mulanje; Chambe, Khuto and Sapitwa. All children are placed in a House at the beginning of Year 1. Siblings are placed in the same House. The Houses give the children a sense of identity, community spirit and common purpose. House points are awarded for good work and behaviour, with weekly totals announced in Assembly. In this way the ethos and values of the school are communicated to the children.
