Year 4 Parent Orientation Letter

Year 4 Parent Orientation

Welcome back to a new school year.  As always, the start of a new school year holds the promise of new discovery and learning, as well as the prospect of personal growth in all areas.

The following information will help you and your child become familiar with my expectations for the year.

General Information

  • Please note that school begins promptly at 7:10, and ends at 12:30 Mon-Thursday, 12:00 on Fridays.  Clubs being at 12:45, and end at 1:30 for session 1 and 2:30 for session 2.
  • Please ensure that your child has a healthy break packed every day.  If your child is staying after school for clubs please make sure they have their lunch with them when they leave for school in the morning.  It is school policy that lunches are not to be dropped off in the afternoon.  Hillview has a healthy break policy, and the following items are now banned in break boxes:

*Nutella

crisps

biscuits/cakes

sweets

chocolate

fizzy drinks

Sobo (etc.)

  • We ask for your support and compliance with these rules.  Recent studies in the UK have shown that children’s behaviour and attention span severely decline when they eat/drink sugar, preservatives, and colourants.
  • School Supplies – Please make sure your child has all the school supplies required.  I have extra list available if needed.  Please keep in mind that supplies will need to be replenished throughout the year.  I ask that children have separate supplies for school and home, as transporting them in-between often means they are lost or forgotten.
  • Absenteeism – if your child is away from school, I would appreciate a letter upon their return explaining the reason for the absenteeism.  A phone call to the office is also acceptable.  Please try to encourage regular attendance. Each time your child is away from school he/she is missing vital parts of curriculum and this will most certainly put him/her at a disadvantage.  School calendars have been sent home; please make your holiday plans accordingly.
  • The children are to come to school in their full and correct uniform everyday.  Please label all of their belongings, as they are very easily mixed up with other children’s. Students should bring sports kits everyday (even if they don’t have sport scheduled).
  • Assemblies and Giving Days: On class assembly day the children may come to school dressed in their play clothes.  They are to bring in a cake or savoury to be sold at our class’ cake sale.  It would be wonderful if you were to come to our assembly at 11:15 on Sept. 27th to show your support.  You will be notified of Giving Day, and I encourage everyone to support generously.
  • Homework: The children have homework diaries, and they are expected to write their homework down everyday.  Although they should be working more independently now, it is still vital that you supervise and encourage them with their homework.  There will be a monitoring system to check that the homework diary and reading records are signed daily.  This is a means of communication between school and the home and can be used should a message need to be conveyed.  Please note that sensitive matters should be placed in a sealed envelop.

-Students will receive a Spelling list every Monday.  They are expected to write their words every night in their Spelling Book.  In addition, certain weeks they may be asked to write sentence or put words in alphabetical order.

– I give a Numeracy or Literacy worksheet (single sided) Monday –Thursday to be completed for the following day.  Please help your child with this work, as the purpose of homework is to reinforce what is learned in school.  I do ask that you follow the strategies taught in Numeracy (ask your child how I taught them to do it).  Although there are many correct ways in which to reach an answer, it can be very confusing to students when they are told two different strategies.

-Students are expected to read for 20 minutes each night. I strongly encourage you to have your child read aloud to you, and for you to discuss the book and ask questions.  This will help develop your child’s fluency and comprehension.

-Occasionally the French and Science teacher will assign homework.  Students will have one week to complete this work.

Homework Timetable

Monday Spelling, Read 20 min with an adult, worksheet, Library books for Tuesday
Tuesday Spelling, Read 20 min with an adult, worksheet
Wednesday Spelling, Read 20 min with an adult, worksheet, Swimming costume for Thurs.
Thursday Spelling, Read 20 min with an adult, worksheet, wear PE kit Friday and bring uniform

  • Appointments: I am always willing to speak to a parent should there be something you wish to discuss.  I ask only that I be given some notice, this gives me the opportunity to make certain I am free and that I can give the matter my full attention.
  • Birthdays: You are encouraged to send goodies to school on your child’s birthday so we can celebrate.  Cupcakes are good option, as they don’t need to be cut.
  • Discipline: In order for the class to be able to work effectively and happily each day, discipline needs to be maintained.  I expect each child in my class to be respectful, well-mannered, considerate, self-disciplined, and tolerant of others. I would appreciate your full support as parents, as we both have a common goal – your child’s happiness!
  • Notices and Circulars: Please read these carefully and make note of any useful information.  If a reply slip is attached, please make every effort to complete it and return to school – even if you are not participating.
  • Clubs: If your child had indicated that they wish to participate in a club please make certain that he/she honours this commitment. Make sure your child has a healthy lunch to eat before clubs begin.  If your child is unable to attend a club for whatever reason, please send a note to the club teacher to inform them.

  • Assessments: Every Friday your child will do a spelling test.  I will also be conducting various assessments throughout the year.  This will take place in the form of creative/informal activities during a lesson as well as formal test which requires individual revision beforehand.  Please encourage your child to work well throughout the year and not save it all until term ending and testing.  Classwork throughout the term will make up the bulk of their final result.

The Curriculum:

Literacy: We will be using the Collins scheme in addition to reading novels.

Numeracy: this will be a continuation of the Heinemann scheme.

Science: this will be taught by Mrs. Chisi

History: Students will study The Romans, The Vikings and World War II.

Geography: We will be studying the environment and how to improve it, villages in Malawi, and names and locations of places around the World.

ICT: will be taught by Mr. Stewart

Physical Education: Swimming will be on Thursday from 11:30 – 12:30 and Sport lessons will be on Fridays from 8:25 – 9:25.

Art – We will be studying many different topics and types of art throughout the year.

Music: Mr. Thompson will be teaching the students music this year.

Library: The children will go to library on Tuesdays.  It is important that they remember to bring their books and library bags each week.  I encourage the children to check out the full number of books allowed.  One of their books is to be kept at school, so they have something to read when they have completed assignments.  Please encourage your child to take care of their books as they are expensive and difficult to replace.

To help keep you organised at home, here are the days of the week students must bring extra items.

Tuesday Children must bring their Library books and bags
Thursday Children must bring their swimming costumes
Fridays Children are to come in school their PE kits, and bring their uniform to change into before assembly.

I look forward to a wonderful year!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Barrett

Computer Keyboard Skills

Pupils in Years 4,5 & 6 have been practising and improving their computer keyboard skills. Regular practice can improve speed and accuracy in typing and provide a valuable skill for the future.

Click on the picture below to access the free tying tutor we have been using.

Remember before you begin typing make sure you are sitting up straight, your feet flat on the floor. Keep your elbows close to your body, your wrists straight and your forearms level, and remember to take regular breaks.
